'Sub-Par'anormal Acitivty

The hype surrounding rookie Oren Peli's new movie "Paranormal Activity" is overwhelming. From IMDb's 8.0/10 rating to RottenTomato's 85% to flooded facebook status updates, the most talked about low budget movie since Blair Witch's emergence to mainstream media delivers. The overall movie is rather boring and cheesy at times, but here's why I loved it. The main actors, both nonentities, had a perfect chemistry between them. There was not a single awkward moment in the movie between these two. It was as if they truly were a young couple. Also, the lack of plot holes truly impressed me. With modern day horrors, its hard to find a story with every aspect covered. PA defies the laws of untold plot points and covers every corner mentioned. My favorite aspect, however, was the fact they didn't have to relate a story to the reason Katie was being haunted. The reason this movie was overall okay with me was the corniness of some of the hauntings and the repitition throughout the whole of the film, much of which generated laughs from the sold out crowd. The door moving was obviously stop motion animation, as you could see the door flinch in spots. Also, the re-use of noises without finding any ghost or supernatural beings gets old. Almost every night leading up to the last three had some sort of strange noise (all were very similar) resulting in the couple trying to find out the cause. This resulted in anti-climactic camera turns to dark areas with no reward in the end. Of course, attempting to gain suspense in these type of situations is an intelligent movie technique, keeping the audience waiting untill the last 2 or 3 nights is just plain mean. Granted, the ending of the movie definitely made me jump, lose my breath, and even shed a tear or two, I hate to think that the final five minutes is the scapegoat for any movie. Nonetheless, Paranormal Activity was a well written, well filmed, geniously ended movie that I would recommend to any movie goer looking for a movie that will haunt you for days after you see it.
